“History is the only laboratory we have in which to test the consequences of thought.”- Etienne Gilson(Historian and Philosopher)
The study of history shows us that if you do not understand what has gone before then you can not really understand what is to come. Perhaps another, more pessimistic, interpretation of this was by George Santayana who said “Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”
At St Joan of Arc we believe that History must be more than a ramshackle collection of facts from the past, but rather an experience which will stimulate the student and develop a life-long interest in the subject.
At a time when the study of History has never been more popular or accessible, there is a much greater value put on the skills required to do this successfully by employers and academic institutions.
History at St Joan’s is a very popular option subject at both GCSE and A-level. The enthusiasm for this is reflected throughout the Department by both Staff and Pupils. A variety of study methods are used, both inside and outside the classroom, and students are encouraged to expand upon their interests.
