The Music Department
The Music Department consists of 3 teaching rooms, including a large music technology room with Apple Mac computers. Each classroom has keyboards and a range of percussion instruments. We also have 2 recording studios, an ensemble room, where the steel band and large groups rehearse and 4 other instrumental teaching rooms. All classrooms and the ensemble room are fitted with full surround capability. There is also a large stock of music and selection of instruments of all varieties throughout the department.
Our full time Music Teachers demonstrate flair and passion for the subject, are skilled instrumentalist and singers and all play an active role in the extra curricular life of the school. We have concerts every term and regularly perform in national and international music events including a biennial performance at Disneyland Paris. A full programme of extended curricular activities including choirs, bands and ensembles run throughout the school year.
The Music Department is fully supported by an excellent team of 10 instrumental and music technology teachers who work within the music curriculum and deliver individual lessons to over 200 students at the school.
The aim of the Music Department’s curriculum is to enable full access to all students whatever their abilities. KS3 Music is taught to all students in Years 7, 8 and 9 and covers a very wide and diverse range of topics from Western Classical Music to World Music to Song Writing. Student’s learn how to read and write music, play instruments and develop their singing.
We have three large mixed ability GCSE Music groups in both years 10 & 11 and the average A* - C pass rates over the last 10 years have been well over 80%. A-Level Music and A-Level Music Technology are also hugely popular and successful subjects at Post 16. Both A-Level courses are taught by a range of guest specialist teachers as well as the full time teaching staff. All of the teachers in the department share a consistent approach towards raising the achievement of our students.
